Bachfest 2013: Vita Christi – The Life of Christ
Bach’s great oratorios—the Christmas Oratorio, the St. John Passion, and the Easter and Ascension Oratorios—form a single narrative telling the life of Christ through the church year. This grand project must have been a highlight in the musical life of Leipzig in 1734-1735. At this year’s Festival, Bach’s unique musical realization of these scenes from the vita Christi will be presented in three concerts, directed by Trevor Pinnock and Sir John Eliot Gardiner.
Biblical stories of the life of Jesus Christ inspired many composers to write original works. In this context, you will also be hearing works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Haydn, Schubert, Beethoven and Schumann. Every day, cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed that illustrate the life of Christ.
The complete schedule is available on the Bach Festival website; they also have a Facebook page.
